17 July, 2017. Samoa – Entrepeneur Amia Mauigoa is co-owner of the Blade Barber Shop in Apia established in 2013.
In an exclusive interview with Samoa Planet she shared the story of how she started the business with her husband.
“My business started off when my husband went to New Zealand for three months. We used the money he brought from his trip to assist as capital to start off. We also applied for a small loan from the Development Bank of Samoa.”
Ms Mauigoa is a mother of five children. Like many entrepeneurs, she balances the demands of running a business with parenting. She also has a fulltime job working as a secretary at the Development Bank.
“At the moment, I am on maternity leave but I will be back to work next week. My new baby is now one month old. My other children are 10, 8, 7 and 3 years old respectively.”
The business has three barbers who work there.
“In a busy week, we can make about $2000, but if business is slow, we usually earn around $1600. We pay our barbers weekly; in total we spend $500 on their wages every week.”
“Some of the money that we earn covers for the equipment like clippers and the products we use in the shop. We also have to pay rent. Usually I just save up and pay the amount at the end of every month.”
“The money from the Barber Shop helps to take care of my kids, to pay their school fees and our day-to-day living.”
“It’s not just us, but my whole family that is relying on this business for income and provision. Our challenge is that there are many barber shops in town, so it’s very competitive to get customers.”
The Blade Barber Shop was one of several barber shops present at the S.B.E.C Trade Fair in Apia, last month.
According to the Blade Barber Shop Facebook page, this small yet successful business has a reputation for the best ‘fades’ in town. Many customers commented on their excellent service and know-how in the latest hair styles and cuts. They also have a five-star review rating for service.
Blade Barber Shop is located at the Pacific Building, Saleufi, in Apia. They specialise in haircuts, hair design, beard trimming, ladies cuts and hair colouring. Basic haircuts start at $10. Contact them on number 7283069 or through their Facebook page @blade685
